I am currently a second-year M.Tech student working on my academic project titled “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of E-Waste Plastic from Mobile Phones in India.” The study is a literature-based attributional LCA following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards, and my professor has instructed me to complete the entire analysis using MS Excel. The goal of the study is to compare different e-waste plastic management scenarios and identify environmental hotspots. For this purpose, I have selected four treatment scenarios: mechanical recycling, pyrolysis, incineration, and solvent extraction. The system boundary for the study is cradle-to-grave, where the cradle begins at the stage when a smartphone reaches its end-of-life and becomes e-waste, followed by collection and transportation, and the grave represents the final waste treatment method. The functional unit is 1 kg of plastic recovered from waste smartphones. At this stage, I am facing difficulties in the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) phase, particularly in identifying reliable data sources and conducting the required calculations in Excel. My professor suggested using data from research papers, but I am struggling with compiling the data and performing the LCA calculations. I am seeking guidance on how to approach the data collection, structuring of the life cycle inventory, and performing the LCA calculations in Excel for this project.
